The discovery of the wall and the inscriptions
The testimony of Alexandre de Laborde on the walls of Antioch (November 20, 1826):
“We easily follow the line of the enclosure marking here and there resumptions of all eras, marked by the system of constructions of different times. Here the stones are rigorously matched, further on, they are sculpted in bossage, Roman period; finally, it is like bringing together specimens of each mode of construction used in different periods of decadence, down to this mosaic formed by the use of materials taken from other buildings and assembled with as much haste as little talent”.
Excerpt from Voyage de l'Asie Mineure by Mr Alexandre de Laborde, Becker, Hall and Léon de Laborde, Firmin Didot editor, Paris, 1838-1861, p. 114.
The northwestern segment of the city wall was only fully excavated in 1999 by the archaeological service of the Museum of Yalvaç. These discoveries are little known and have only been the subject of two publications and comments:
in 2000 by M. Tașlıalan, in an article in Turkish published in Denizli: “Pisidia Antiokheia' sı 1999 yili çalıșmaları”, 11. Müze çalıșmaları ve kurtama kazıları sempuzyumu, 24-26 Nisan 2000, Denizli, p. 134-146 (photographs p. 144-146).
in 2006, by M. Byrne and G. Labarre, but without attaching the photographs of the wall and the inscriptions: Nouvelles inscriptions d'Antioche de Pisidie d'après les Note-books de WM Ramsay, IK 67, p. 79-93
