Theater
The theater is located in the center of the city, about 50 m from the main road (cardo maximus). Its foundation probably dates back to the Hellenistic period and it is possible that the building underwent alterations during the Roman period. The theater, designed after a Greek plan, consists of:
-
terraces (the cavea) resting directly on the side of the hill, in a semicircle, 105 m long at the base and 185 m at its highest level
-
the pit (orchestra) 35 m in diameter and 1.10 m wide between the bleachers and the stage
-
of the stage (scena), about 100 m long on which the actors moved.
Archaeologists estimate that this theater could accommodate between 12,000 and 15,000 people, spread over the 26 rows of bleachers. The stairs provide access to the stands which bore inscriptions naming the populations of the surrounding cities who attended the shows (Philomelion, Apollonia, Synnada).
